Central Beers

Our first stop for Málaga craft beer bars was Central Beers. The vibe of the space was really cool and reminded me of craft beer bars in North America with high top tables, exposed brick and cool decor. It was nice that this spot was open for lunch because many of the restaurants and bars don’t open until later or close in the afternoon for siesta.

My husband and I both ordered a burger and a beer. I had a kids burger with fries which was actually the perfect size for lunch and my husband, as usual, ordered the fanciest burger on the menu. When his burger arrived at the table, it was the size of his head and I had no idea how he was gonna eat it. He figured it out.

La Fabrica

Next step we have La Fabrica, a large craft beer bar in Málaga. This space is huge and very popular among locals. When we were there, it was obvious that lots of friends were meeting after work for a bite to eat and drink.

We decided to sit at the bar because sometimes that’s the best spot to talk with a bartender or just people watch and truly take in the space. There’s also a large patio outside to enjoy. In this space you could see all of the beer tanks in the background and it had a very industrial modern feel. This was another bar that reminded me of North American beer bars, but we still really enjoyed our beer and our time there.

Cervecería La Botica de la Cerveza

One of the best craft beer bars we went into in Málaga was called Cervecería La Botica De La Cerveza. This was definitely the most authentic and local feeling beer bar that we went into. This is mainly because it’s a smaller space. The owner was loading in tanks of beer and was the only one around. You could tell he was very passionate about beer and they had a wide selection of craft beer available on tap and in cans.

There was also a few locals sitting at the bar and a few others at the little couch lounge area, which is always nice to see and a fun way to people watch and feel like you’re amongst locals. I asked my usual questions in craft beer bars by asking for the fruitiest beer on the menu. He showed me a smoothie sour ale can and I said “why not”.

When he brought my beer to our table, he stood there gently, shaking the can or rotating the can to mix up the beer without shaking the can too much. I was a bit surprised. I didn’t really know what he was doing until he started to pour my beer in the glass and I realize this truly was as thick as a smoothie. The mix of banana, bananas, passionfruit, mangoes, pineapples along with the beer flavour really created a unique drink. Although it took me ages to finish this beer, I actually really enjoyed it and kind of felt like I was drinking something healthy at the same time as enjoying a cold beer. Who knew that was possible!

Out of the Málaga craft beer bars that we visited, we enjoyed this one the most because it felt the most authentic, European and local.

Birras Deluxe

Birras Deluxe is by far one of the best craft beer bars in Málaga, Spain. It’s definitely worthy of a visit. They have a few things that really stand out like a huge selection of craft beers, extra friendly bartenders (wearing suspenders with beers on them), and a cool local vibe.

When we were looking in the door to see if there was space for us, the bartender (who was on the phone) saw us looking and waved us in and said “Hey Guys! Come on in!”. It was the most friendly greeting and made us feel like he’d been waiting for us! It was a great start.

So many craft beers to choose from

They have lots of beers to choose from on tap that are all displayed on a screen. The bartenders will help you choose if you don’t know what to try. That’s how I discovered the Raspberry and the Cherry Chouffe. They had just put it on tap and when I asked for something ‘fruity’, he didn’t hesitate to recommend that one. I started with the raspberry and it’s delicious – a new favourite of mine. Naturally, I had to try the cherry as well and it’s equally as delicious. My husband ordered the natural Chouffe and really enjoyed it.

They have a few tables, stools to sit at the bar (that’s where we sat), and if you’re lucky – two stools at a high top table with a garage door window that looks out into the street. It’s the best seat in the house for enjoying a beer and taking in the sights and sounds of Málaga. Birras Deluxe did feel like a perfect mix of locals and visitors. There was even a table of locals playing cards. It’s a great spot that I hope you add to your must-visit list.

The Kiwi House Of Beers

The Kiwi House Of Beers is run by a couple from New Zealand (hence the name). They’re super friendly, open for a chat and really knowledgeable about craft beer. They work with local suppliers to bring in delicious beers. In fact, their bar slogan is ‘No Crap On Tap’. We enjoyed our time here and the beers. It’s a bonus they give you a little bowl of popcorn with your beer order!

Random Fun Fact: As we were chatting with one of the owners we learned that Málaga liquor licenses are limited within the city so not everyone can open a bar.
